After looking at different ideas to represent my memories and also after looking at Marc Quinn's interesting work, which he used his own blood for, I decided that I would include an even more personal element to my project.
I have taken a mould of my face, using dental alginate. I lay down with my hands over my eyes, representing me re-thinking my memories and remembering past events that have been stored at the back of my mind. Once I did this, I encased my mould in plaster of paris to steady it and I then took the face mould out and placed carrier bags underneath it, as I then poured water onto the face to make an ice cast of it. The water didn't stay in place, so we have to use a large plastic bin liner as well underneath the face mould - this worked better. Once we had done this, we placed the face mould and plaster of paris into a box and placed it in the freezer to set.
After this piece has set, I think what I'm going to do it video the ice melting away, as if the memories are unfreezing from my mind and being uncovered. This also links in with layering things together, which I thought about for my video piece as the ice with my revealing layers underneath.
The ice could act as a recurring theme in my project, as the memories drip away and uncover themselves. Ice preserves memories and hands represent how I remember things.
The fine detail that it has gathered is amazing and I think the mould has worked extremely well. I hope that the ice idea works - I will let you know.
Other Ideas
- Another idea it to possibly represent my memories on a plinth or board, such as fish and chips and a glass of sherry.
- I want to make a collage of the images that I have talked about within my project.
- Possibly think about a collage of hands.
- Look at Damien Hirst and how he freezes and preserves his work when he created his piece using a shark.
- Make resin moulds of memories, i.e. chips, sherry.
- Currently looking at different resins and how I can preserve things.
- Do more face moulds and possibly add bits of my hair into it.
- Get a face model and stick chips onto it and cover it with something to create a cast and I will have a face mould made out of chips.
